our COSMETOLOGY curriculum
At our San Antonio campus, our Cosmetology Operator curriculum covers a wide variety of fundamentals across a range of beauty services. Hair care is front and center; you’ll learn classroom theory and hands-on skills in professionally shampooing, cutting, bleaching and coloring, and styling hair for everyday looks and special events.
You’ll dive into the science behind beauty and wellness through classes on anatomy, physiology, and bacteriology. Additional classes expand your knowledge with lessons in skincare, makeup application, and manicuring.
All of the skills and instruction rest on the use of Aveda 100% vegan, plant-essence powered products and techniques so you can ensure that your future clients get a top-tier salon or spa experience. We also prepare you to join the workforce at any level, with courses in salon management, retailing, and client consultations.
While the 1,000-hour Cosmetology Operator program covers all of these vital topics that will prepare you for the state board exam requirements, the 1,500-hour program includes a bundle of additional training and opportunities to boost your preparation even further. The additional training hours include:
- “Total Beauty” classes that teach a head-to-toe approach to inner and outer beauty
- Individual artistic development in hair cutting and coloring
- Photoshoots and editorial styling sessions to prepare you for runway/fashion and print publication work
- Consultation and retail sales workshops, so you can supplement your income with savvy sales techniques

How long does it take?
Two Cosmetology Operator programs are available at our bustling San Antonio campus: a 1,500-hour program, which takes 12 to 18 months to complete, and a 1,000-hour option, which typically takes just 8 to 12 months, or less than a calendar year.
The schedules for both programs consist of 30 training hours per week. We offer two different class schedules, so it’s never been easier to fit your studies in around other commitments.
Classes can be taken on a three-day schedule, running Monday through Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., or on a four-day schedule, running Wednesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Both class schedules include a one-hour lunch break every day, during which you can grab a bite to eat from one of our delicious local food spots.
What’s needed to enroll?
To enroll in either Cosmetology Operator program at our San Antonio campus, you must meet the following requirements:
Age: 16 years (note – you must be 17 years old to sit licensing exams)
Education: High school diploma (or equivalent). Unlike other local beauty schools, we’re proud to accept high school diplomas from the SA Leadership Academy and the Victory Learning Center.
Other Requirements: Submit an application, pay a $100 non-refundable application fee, submit a letter of recommendation, a letter of intent, a government-issued ID with proof of age and photo, and a social security card. You must also schedule an interview with an Admissions team member.
