Honoring the Future: Aveda Arts Student Wins Leo Passage Scholarship

At Aveda Arts & Sciences Institutes, we believe education transforms lives. That belief echoes the vision of Leo Passage—an industry icon whose legacy continues to inspire creativity, innovation, and the power of knowledge. To carry his vision forward, Pivot Point and Beauty Changes Lives created the Leo Passage Scholarships, honoring both students and educators who are shaping the future of the beauty industry.

In Spring of 2025, we are proud to celebrate one of our own Aveda Arts student to win the Leo Passage Scholarship:

Hugo Aveda Arts Student Wins Leo Passage Scholarship through Beauty Changes Lives in Partnership with Pivot Point

Meet Hugo Cifuentes

Hugo, a student at Aveda Arts & Sciences Institute Arlington, has been awarded the Leo Passage “Dare to Lead” Student Scholarship, receiving $7,500 in recognition of his artistry, leadership, and passion for advancing the beauty industry.

Hugo’s creativity and vision embody what it means to dare to lead. He has already shown the ability to push boundaries, inspire peers, and make an impact beyond the classroom. His passion reminds us that the next generation of leaders is already here—and they’re sitting in our classrooms.

Hear Hugo share his journey in his own words on Instagram.

Q: What first inspired you to pursue cosmetology?
A: From a young age, I was captivated by beauty in all its forms—hair, fashion, art, and beyond. What fascinated me most was how much hair could completely transform someone’s look, confidence, and attitude. Growing up with two sisters gave me the perfect canvas to explore that curiosity. I was always convincing them to let me experiment with their hair. I remember staging and recording mini fashion shows and photo shoots at home whenever our parents weren’t around (there may have been a little bit of bribing with candy or treats on my part to get them to always cooperate). We look back and laugh at those silly but very fun moments.

Q: How did you feel when you found out you’d been awarded the Leo Passage “Dare to Lead” Scholarship?
A: I was in complete disbelief. Honestly, I had to read the email five times before it sank in. The thought of me receiving this award felt almost far-fetched, especially considering the number of submissions I know they must have received. After it sank in, I called my husband to share the news—thrilled beyond words. I am genuinely humbled to this day. I’m certain there were tons of talented peers who were considered, and many were very much deserving of this award.

Q: What does “Dare to Lead” mean to you personally?
A: Personally, “Dare to Lead” means having the courage to choose passion over certainty. I left behind a corporate career and went against my parents’ wishes to pursue cosmetology at Aveda, and that leap taught me that real leadership starts with daring to believe in yourself and never letting fear decide your fate.

Q: Why did you choose Aveda Arts Arlington for your education?
A: I chose Aveda Arts Arlington because, after doing a bit of research, it stood out as a highly reputable institute with strong industry connections. What drew me in most was Aveda’s holistic approach to beauty, going beyond technical skills to focus on wellness, creativity, and the bigger picture of the guest experience.

Q: Is there a moment, class, or educator that’s made a big impact on your growth so far?
A: It’s hard to narrow it down to one moment, class, or educator. Every educator at Aveda has shaped me in unique ways. Some have really pushed my cutting skills to new heights, inspiring me to one day master precision cutting. Others have mastered color and lived-in styles, teaching me to trust my instincts and build confidence. Some break down techniques so clearly that everything just clicks. And others bring energy, a unique styling eye, and support that lifts everyone around them. I’m truly grateful for all they’ve taught me.

Q: What are your career goals after graduation?
A: I’m at my best in spaces that inspire me and push me to level up every day. For anyone who knows me, it’s no surprise that NYC is where I belong—full of energy, creativity, and opportunity (and lots of competition too). My goal is to learn from the very best at an Aveda or Sassoon salon. Long-term goals include being part of NYFW and collaborating with fashion houses and editorial magazines.

Q: What advice would you give to future students who are just starting their journey at Aveda Arts?
A: Go in with an open mind and take full advantage of every opportunity to learn from both our talented educators and your peers. Ask questions, stay curious, and remember—you never stop learning, especially in our industry. Treat challenges as chances to grow into a well-rounded hairstylist. Comfort zones won’t get you far, there will be tough days, but they’ll be incredibly rewarding. Never give up. We chose an amazing career path!
