Prepare for a career as a cosmetologist by learning foundational skills in hair and skincare, makeup, manicuring, and business. After completing the cosmetology program at Aveda Arts & Sciences Institute Minneapolis, students will gain the hands-on experience needed to take the state licensing exam.

The cosmetology curriculum provides students with the foundational knowledge to understand hair care and its related beauty services, combined with the technical, real-world experience needed to develop a career in the industry. Expert instructors train students on current techniques using Aveda’s high-performance plant-infused products.
You’ll go far beyond textbook learning with 420 theory training hours and more than 1,100 hours of hands-on experience working with clients and learning the ins and outs of the industry. Students work in a sanitary environment and learn the importance of safety and hygiene in spa and salon settings.
With a focus on hair care, cosmetology students also learn business fundamentals for a career as a freelancer, retail employee, or salon owner, depending on their aspirations.
After completing the cosmetology coursework, students will be eligible to complete the State Licensing exam and be qualified to work as an entry-level cosmetologist.

How long does it take?
The cosmetology course at Aveda Arts & Sciences Institute Minneapolis requires 1,550 hours of coursework and in-person training. Cosmetology programming is 30 hours per week for a total of 52 weeks.
Cosmetology classes begin every 10 weeks, so you have plenty of opportunities to start your journey throughout the year.
Choose from two scheduling options:
- A-side Schedule: Monday through Wednesday 8:30 am-7:30 pm, every other Saturday 7:30 am-6:30 pm (1-hour break) (replaces Wednesday)
- Short-day Schedule: Tuesday through Friday 8:30am – 4:30pm (30-minute break) every other week, then Wednesday through Saturday 8:30am – 4:30pm (7:30am – 3:30pm on Saturday) (30-minute break) alternating weeks
What’s needed to enroll?
If you’re ready to enroll at the Aveda Arts & Sciences Institute – Minneapolis, prepare your necessary documents before submitting an application along with the application and enrollment fees. Contact an admissions manager to schedule a campus tour and information interview to learn more about the facility and programs offered.
Age – Applicants must be at least 16 years of age.
Education – High school diploma or equivalent is required. Please submit any additional higher education records. Students with foreign credentials must have translated and verified documents.
Identification – Government-issued ID and social security card.
Eligibility Documents – Proof of U.S. citizenship or eligibility to study in the United States.
